Vernier - Mix it Up: Combining Liquids of Different Temps

Activity Overview

Students use the EasyTemp Probe to measure the temperature of hot and cold water before and after mixing. Students compare the mixing temperatures to a linear prediction. EasyData™ is needed for this activity.

Key Steps

The Events with Entry feature of the EasyData app can be used to record the temperature of the two separate samples and the mixture.
The formula for the temperature of a mixture is compared with the experimental results. Then students explore what conditions are necessary to be able to use the average of the two original temperatures.
