Activity Overview

In this activity, students learn to create a categorical list, then convert their data into a pie chart, and use it to answer questions.

Before the Activity

  • Set up the calculator as explained in the appendix file
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print the pages from the attached PDF file for the class
  • During the Activity

    Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Sort candies by color and find the number of each color present
  • Create a category list and observe the data in a table format
  • Find the percent of the total graph represented by each color
  • Graph the data using a circle chart
  • Find the probability of getting each color
  • After the Activity

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
