Activity Overview

In this activity, students practice simplifying fractions in a game format by dividing the numerator and denominator by the greatest common factor.

Before the Activity

  • Set up the calculator as explained in the activity
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 11 - 14 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

    Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Enter a fraction and recognize whether it is in its simplest form
  • Predict the greatest common factor of the numerator and denominator of a fraction and record it
  • Use the calculator to check the prediction
  • Earn points for a correct prediction
  • If the prediction is incorrect, guess again and verify using the calculator
  • Repeat the activity for different fractions
  • After the Activity

    Students complete the Student Activity sheet.

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
