Algebra Nomograph

Activity Overview

This activity is similar to a function machine. The nomograph is comprised of two vertical number lines, input on the left and output on the right. The transformation of input to output is illustrated dynamically by an arrow that connects a domain entry to its range value. Students try to find the rule of a hidden function by entering domain values and observing how they are transformed. They also use a nomograph with three vertical number lines to explore inverse functions.

Before the Activity

Download the attached PDF and look over the information on the first page. Download and distribute the attached .tns file and Student Worksheet for use during the activity. A .tns file containing templates for different types of nomographs is also available for download.

During the Activity

Discuss the material from the activity pages and worksheet with students as needed.

After the Activity

Encourage students to summarize what they have learned from completing the activity. If desired, discuss the extension questions with students.
