A Geometry "Icebreaker": Getting to Know your Fellow Students

Activity Overview

In this activity students will make concept connections numerically, graphically and analytically concerning lines of symmetry between points. This is a nice ice-breaker at the beginning of the school year. Students are given a point name in the plane and work with other students in the class to find lines of symmetry. They are asked to find "fellow" student points sharing both vertical and horizontal lines of symmetry.

Before the Activity

Prerequisites:

  • Content knowledge of the algebraic and geometric properties of linear equations, lines of symmetry (vertical and horizontal) and the perpendicular bisector of a segment
  • Calculator background in graphing points, lines and perpendicular bisectors.

  • During the Activity

Download the TNS file and make it available to students.
