NCSS: Entrepreneurs: Field Interviews

Activity Overview

Students will conduct in-person or telephone field interviews of entrepreneurs they have access to. Students should shape their interviews so that, at the conclusion, they will have a clear understanding of what it takes to start a business venture.

Before the Activity

See the attached Activity PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity.

Print the appropriate pages from the Activity for your class.

Install the LearningCheck(tm), NoteFolio(tm), and TimeSpan(tm) Apps on the students' graphing calculators following the attached instructions.

Teacher should introduce the assignment in an open discussion. Students will be challenged with the task of interviewing an entrepreneur to examine the issue: Why would you take the risk of starting your own enterprise?

During the Activity

  • Distribute the appropriate pages from the Activity to your class
  • Distribute the LearningCheck(tm), NoteFolio(tm), and TimeSpan(tm) file(s) to your class using TI Connect(tm) and the appropriate TI Connectivity cable
  • Follow the procedures outlined in the Activity

  • Students will:
  • Understand entrepreneurs in an economic sense.
  • Understand the role of entrepreneurs in a free market system.
  • Be able to identify the process an entrepreneur goes through to enter a product market.
  • Consider the decision an entrepreneur makes to enter the product market rather than work for an established business.
  • After the Activity

Students will create a TImeSpan(tm) timeline that visually highlights the important periods of the entrepreneur's life and his/her business venture. This TImeSpan(tm) file should be named using the entrepreneur's name, turned in to the teacher, and saved for future use. The TImeSpan(tm) Creator Instruction sheet at the end of this activity provides instructions for using the TImeSpan(tm) Creator software.
