Activity Overview

This is a partner activity. One calculator is used to explore and the other is used to continue the learn check. It was designed to help students understand the concept of windows and what happens with the various window settings. Using a pair of equations students explore what happens when the window settings are changed. It is designed to spark discussion between pairs as to how to read axis and recognize window settings.

Before the Activity

If you are using the TI-Navigator System with the TI-73 you will need the attached .pdf file.

Students work in pairs. Both enter the LearningCheck™ document. Student B exits and uses the calculator to explore 3 through 12 with Student A. The design of having partner B re-enter the app and record window setting of partner A is to check their work and re-enforce their conjectures. Both partner A and B should answer the explanation questions in their own words to clarify their understanding of window settings. Should any pair finish before you collect from the class, ask them to find the viewing window for y = .5x+15 or y = x^2 +12

After the Activity

Collect the file and use the slide show of class analysis to continue the discussion. Encourage student pairs to share the strategies used during the activity.
