VIC: Monty Hall

Objectives

This classic problem is perfect for long run probability simulation as many students' intuition leads them to the incorrect conclusion. After exploring the long term outcomes, students accept that their logic did not solve the problem so there must be something else they are not seeing. This activity highlights the importance of simulation.

Vocabulary

  • Simulation
  • Long term outcome
  • Independent and dependent events

About the Lesson

In the original game show, the contestant chooses one of three doors. The host reveals a different door, that doesn't contain the prize and poses the question to the contestant, "would you like to change your mind?" Is it better to stick with your original choice or change your mind? Check out the activity to see the answer, you may be surprised!
