Objectives
In this activity students, interpret and model motion using quadratic functions;
analyse real-time data to identify key features of parabolas; understand the connection between algebraic equations and physical phenomena and
use digital tools to collect, visualise, and analyse mathematical data.
Vocabulary
- Linear Factors
- Factorise
- Axis Intercepts
- Model
- Dilate
About the Lesson
Using motion sensors to capture live data gives students a tangible connection to abstract concepts. Instead of working with idealised or pre-generated graphs, they engage with authentic, imperfect data—just like scientists and engineers do. The TI-Nspire and CBR2 setup encourages digital fluency while supporting inquiry-based learning. Students take ownership of the data collection process and develop critical thinking skills as they interpret and model the results.
