Year 7: Counting Factors image

Counting Factors

How fast could you count the factors of 3600? In this activity students use a simple algorithm to determine the quantity of factors for any given number, the algorithm is converted into code for the TI-Nspire calculator then tested. Students are then able to explore patterns in the quantity of factors.

    Fast Facts

This activity is an extension of the Factors that Count activity and Counting Factors Coding exercise.  STEM principles involve designing, testing and evaluating.  In this exercise students evaluate the efficiency of the Counting Factors program and through small changes in the code and some basic number facts students dramatically improve the efficiency.

Apply the associative, commutative and distributive laws to aid mental and written computation

      Activity: Mental Arithmetic

The popular TV show "Letters and Numbers" screened on SBS between 2010 and 2012. The Numbers aspect of the show required contestants to use mental arithmetic to generate an equation equal a target number given 6 random numbers consisting of a mix of small and large numbers. Since the show aired, many teachers and their students have played this or similar games. This activity takes the basic game and extends it into a calculator program and an entire investigation sure to build students' arithmetic skills, estimation, problem solving and much more.

      Highest Common Factor

Euclid's Algorithm for the Highest Common Factor is a perfect fit for students coding in mathematics. This 2000 year old algorithm finds the highest common factor of two numbers, students can however extend the algorithm to find the highest common factor of a list of numbers with the option to place this new functionality in the calculator's public library.

        Goldbach Conjecture

Explore one of the great ‘unsolved mathematics’ problems.  The humble beginnings make this problem accessible to upper primary level mathematics:  “Every even number greater than two can be written as the sum of two prime numbers”.   Students start by exploring two digit numbers, then they apply some relatively simple coding commands to write a basic program that makes exploration quicker.  One of the beauties of this unsolved mathematics problem is that it is easy to escalate the mathematics and coding aspects to provide a challenge to a broad range of students.
