Activity Overview
Students use repeated division informed by knowledge of rules for finding factors such as: “even numbers are divisible by 2” and “numbers ending in a 5 or 0 are divisible by 5”. Students construct factor trees, search for factors and some more challenging problems relating to prime factorisation of a number.
Objectives
Use simple divisibility rules to help identify prime and composite numbers;
Represent numbers as a product of their prime factors, with and without the use of index notation;
Construct a factor tree.
