The Function Editor App
How do I determine a minimum or maximum?
To find the minimum or maximum of a function follow the example below.
Example: Find the maximum of the function
\( y = -3x^2 - 6x + 2 \).
1. Press g to activate POI trace.
2. Press the arrow keys to move the cursor toward the maximum or enter a numeric value to jump close to the maximum. When the cursor passes over a maximum in POI trace mode, the value of the maximum will be displayed along with the x-coordinate and an indication that a maximum has been reached.
Alternatively, one can use the calculations menu and follow the steps below:
1. Press h to graph the parabola.
2. Press a à 4 to select the "maximum" command from the CALC menu.
3. The handheld will prompt for a "Left Bound". Press | 2 then press =.
4. The handheld will prompt for a "Right Bound". Press 0 then press =.
5. The handheld will prompt for a "Guess". Press the arrow keys to move the cursor as close as possible to the actual maximum point and press =.
The handheld will display the maximum point as a coordinate pair.
