Activity Overview
Students use data for the braking distance of a vehicle. The data is non-linear so students use the lists in a spreadsheet to transform and linearise the data.
Objectives
To analyse braking data (quadratic relationship), transforming this data to linearise and full linear analysis of the transformed data.
Vocabulary
Explanatory variable, bivariate
About the Lesson
About the activity: Data is given for braking distances at given speeds. The plot reveals a quadratic relationship. Substitution into the quadratic regression is performed, then the data is transformed using an x-squared transformation to create a linear relationship (for courses not requiring this technique students can be given the transformed data). A full analysis including residual patterns and the use of the regression equation is done.
