 Introduction

When your TI-83 graphs a function in Connected Mode, it calculates the coordinates of various points on the graph and connects them with short line segments. The assumption underlying this method of generating the graph is that the function is continuous. In this module you will investigate continuity using informal and formal definitions. You will use the TI-83 to visualize both continuous and discontinuous functions and to graph piecewise functions.

Lesson Index:

    8.1 - Definition of Continuity

    8.2 - Types of Discontinuities

    8.3 - Piecewise Functions

After completing this module, you should be able to do the following:

  • Use the formal definition of continuity to determine if a function is continuous
  • Use the TI-83 to illustrate various types of discontinuities
  • Modify a function with a removable discontinuity to make it continuous
  • Magnify graphs with the Zoom Box feature
  • Graph piecewise functions with the TI-83
