Exploring with the TI-73 Explorer

Who should attend:
Those who desire to learn more about the features of the TI-73 Explorer to assist them in covering topics in middle school mathematics.

Objectives:
Use technology to explore and investigate modes of teaching middle school mathematics.
Experience problem solving situations that take advantage of the exploration/investigation mode of classroom interaction
Work through classroom ready activities that use graphing calculators to enhance students’ understanding and problem solving ability
Develop teachers’ familiarity with the TI-73 Explorer through hands-on explorations modeling effective classroom use of technology
Course Outline:

The main source of content for this course will be the activities from the Explorations book . The main source of content for this course will be the activities from the Explorations book Discovering Mathematics with the TI-73: Activities for Grades 7 and 8. This book will also be offered to participants of the institutes. These activities are classroom ready for teachers to implement right way!

Additional activities will be supplemented as determined by the instructor to suit the needs of the participants and the length of the institute (3 days). These could include various apps available on the TI-73 Explorer, activities for grades 5 and 6 and additional topics such as Pre-algebra and Algebra using the TI-73 Explorer.

Facilities Requirements:
Classroom with chalkboard or white board. Although a computer lab is not needed for this institute, the instructor might want to discuss with the organizer the lab’s availability for TI Connectivity and Internet use.

 

Materials List:
The Organizer
The following is a list of equipment and materials that the organizer must provide:
High-intensity overhead projector with spare bulbs.
Overhead pens, supply of blank transparency sheets, dry-erase markers for white board if that type of board is used in the classroom, or chalk and erasers for a chalkboard.
Name tags for participants
An LCD projector and screen for use with a laptop computer, TI Presenter and/or TI Smartview.
6 to 10 clean medicine vials of different sizes
1 or 2 large bags of candies (Skittles works well) or beans
Wet wipes
100 6 inch straws
100 twist ties
16 rulers (inches and centimeters)
16 scissors
Markers
8 meter sticks
3 2L bottles of Cola (1 of each different Brand)
3 2L bottles of Lemon/Lime (1 of each different brand)
3 2L bottles of Non-Cola (1 of each different Brand)
12 Large pitchers or plastic milk containers
100 small, 3 oz, paper cups
Paper towels
15m -20m of string
Masking tape
Access to a set of stairs
The instructor may need the organizer to request that participants bring copies of their textbooks so they can plan where technology can best be incorporated into their lesson plans.

The instructor will arrange with Texas Instruments Workshop Loan Program (1-888-917-6411) to provide:

30 TI-73 Explorer calculators
One TI-73 Explorer ViewScreen™ overhead panel with DC power adapter.
Small supply of batteries for the TI-73 Explorer calculators.
Supply of TI Connectivity cables.
If desired, TI Presenter.
If desired, TI Navigator.
