 Introduction

In this module you will use data from a falling object to investigate the concept of average velocity, which will be investigated from symbolic, numeric and graphical perspectives. These multiple perspectives will prepare you to make the transition from average velocity to instantaneous velocity and difference quotients.

Lesson Index:

    9.1 - Average Velocity

    9.2 - Instantaneous Velocity

    9.3 - Difference Quotients

After completing this module, you should be able to do the following:

  • Compute average velocities from discrete data and from continuous functions
  • Graphically illustrate average velocities
  • Compute and illustrate instantaneous velocities
  • Understand the relation between average and instantaneous velocities
  • Compute and illustrate left-hand, right-hand and symmetric difference quotients
  • Use the TI-83 Line and Tangent features
