Getting Started With the TI-Innovator™ Rover

This workshop is designed for educators interested in learning more about coding using the TI‑Innovator™ Rover to further engage students in coding and STEM applications.

Building upon the lessons from TI’s 10 Minutes of Code, the workshop shows participants how to control Rover using either TI-84 Plus CE or TI-Nspire™ CX technology. The coding applications covered will be connected to concepts in math and science.

By the end of the workshop, participants should be comfortable:

  • Identifying the Rover's components and specifications
  • Writing programs that control input and output commands on Rover
  • Using variables in a program
  • Using loops and If … Then … Else … End statements to control the direction of Rover
  • Applying what they have learned to create their own activities with connections to mathematics and science


"Getting Started With the TI-Innovator™ Rover" is a one-day workshop. It can be combined with the following workshops to create a two- or three-day workshop option:

During this workshop, participants will learn to:

  • Write programs and navigate Rover to create basic geometric shapes
  • Connect their knowledge of mathematics to direct Rover on a map of Olympus Mons on Mars
  • Connect to physics and rates of change to explore velocity with Rover
  • Use Rover’s Ultrasonic Ranger to have Rover conduct its way through an obstacle course
  • Use two Rovers to identify and work with points of intersection and solving systems of linear equations

Areas of Focus

This workshop connects coding to curriculum concepts. No experience on the TI-84 Plus CE graphing calculator or TI-Nspire™ CX handheld will be required, as basic technology skills will be covered as they are needed.
