Pouring, Mixing and ... Conductivity Is Here

Presenters: Irma Patricia Flores and Ximena Regina Torres Lillo

In this workshop, we will show a way to develop students’ fundamental knowledge about concentration and reaction rate of different solutions through different experiments and didactic strategies by using the Vernier Conductivity Probe and the TI-Nspire™ CX family of graphing calculators. We will analyze the graph of conductivity and concentration of different chemistry solutions to observe the behavior of conductivity. The attendees will experiment how to determine the variables that influence the concept of rate reaction and conductivity. They will observe what happens if they change the concentration of the chemical solution. They will be able to answer the question: What happens if the temperature rises or the behavior changes? We will explore different semiotic representations (graphic and tabular) to develop new ways to understand, analyze and visualize functions. In an innovative way, we will appreciate different settings to improve the visualization of linear functions.

Money, Money, Money: Introducing Systems of Linear Equations With the Help of Google Forms, Google Sheets™ and the TI-Nspire™ App for iPad®

Presenter: Karen Latham

My goal is to harness the power of technology to engage students, make math more interactive, encourage conceptual understanding and build mathematical skills. We will use Google Forms, Google Sheets™ and the TI-Nspire™ App for iPad® to analyze our data and interpret our system of linear equations.

Presenter's note: Attached you can find the TNS file for my "pennies and quarters" activity for my presentation "Money, Money, Money: Introducing Systems of linear equations with the help of Google Forms, Google Sheets and the TI-Nspire app for the iPad". The TNS file will also work with the handheld as well but you will not be able to access the direct links to the Google forms and Google sheets documents linked to the presentation. The presentation will work on the emulator software.

Mathematics for Algebra and Geometry With TI Matrices

Presenter: Ron Armontrout

Matrices have extensive applications. Focusing on using matrices to develop rich tasks that engage students in reasoning and problem-solving, these activities allow students to develop an understanding of math through exploration while extending the use of TI technology in new and creative ways.

Presenter's note: The tns file goes with the handout to make entry of the matrices easier for students. Go to Pg 1.3 Cntrl R runs the program, just hit enter to put in the transformation matrix, and then you can put in a translation both horizontal and vertical. The "flag" is graphed for you on pg 1.5. This was written in 4.5 and I would be very happy if someone made it more elegant perhaps in 5.0 and sent it to me.

Problem-Solving Strategies and Reasoning on the ACT® Exam

Presenter: Jeff McCalla

Did you know that there are almost always two or three bad answers on each ACT® question? Too often, students don’t reason through a question before they guess an answer choice. Instead, students should make sense of problems and forge ahead with a plan to solve them.

Firing Up Kids By Integrating Math and Science

Presenters: Corey Boby and Katie Brown

Within the PLC focus in Arkansas and school districts creating power standards, educators are realizing the many connections between science and math standards. It is vital for teachers to create cross-curricular lessons and ignite the content connections to light a fire for learning within classrooms on a daily basis. Too often students are not exposed to these connections between math and science. In this session, data collection will be used as the bridge to help students see and make connections between their math and science classes. In this session, participants will engage a relevant problem and the use the engineering design model to create a solution. This teaching method can be adapted to both math and science classrooms at all grade levels.
