Solution 14285: Generating Different Random-Number Sequences Using the TI-83 Family, TI-84 Plus Family and TI-Nspire™ Handheld in TI-84 Plus Mode.

How do I generate a random-number sequence that is different than another random-number sequence using the TI-83 family, TI-84 Plus family and TI-Nspire handheld in TI-84 Plus mode?

Using the "rand" function on the TI-83 family, TI-84 Plus family and TI-Nspire handheld in TI-84 Plus mode, the calculator generates the same random-number sequence for a given seed value. The default seed value for the rand function is zero (0).

To generate a different random-number sequence, store any non-zero seed value to rand.

Example: To set 10 as the seed value for rand:

• From the home screen, press [CLEAR] to clear any previous entries, input 10, then press [STO] [MATH] [left arrow] [1] to select rand.
• Press [ENTER] and the calculator will display 10, indicating that 10 has been set as the seed value for rand.

To restore the default seed value for the rand function, input zero (0), then press [STO] [MATH] [left arrow] [1] [ENTER].

NOTE: The seed value also affects the randInt(, randNorm(, and randBin( functions

Please see the TI-83 family and TI-84 Plus family guidebooks for additional information.

NOTE: TI-Nspire handheld in TI-84 Plus mode users may refer to the TI-84 Plus family guidebook.
