Solution 32671: Steps to Configure the Texas Instruments Setup.ini for use with TI-Nspire™ Family Software.

How do I configure the Texas Instruments Setup.ini for use with TI-Nspire Family Software?

Please be advised this license type will be discontinued on November 7, 2023, and your current software will no longer be updated. Converting to a new, account-based license before that date is recommended. In most cases you can receive an equivalent subscription length free of charge by contacting TI-Cares.

For now, you may still activate and use your current software for the full license term, but you will not be able to reactivate or download this software again after November 7. If a new activation or download is needed after that date, you must contact TI-Cares to acquire a new account-based subscription.

The setup.ini file allows for the automated configuration of TI-Nspire Family Software for easier deployment of the software.

The first step to configure the file is to open the setup.ini file in a standard non-formatting text editor such as “Windows® Only: Notepad” or “Mac® Only: TextEdit”.

Please Note: If opened in a word processor such as Microsoft® Word or iWork® Pages® additional formatting will be added that may cause the file to be detected incorrectly by the software.

Configuration changes are different depending on the type of license being used. Listed below are the license type and the configuration options available to that license type.

Universal to all License types:

ALLOW_AUTO_SW_UPDATE
This parameter allows the software to communicate with the website upon launch to verify if there is a newer version available. If there is a new version available it will prompt to the user if they want to upgrade.

DEPLOYLOGDIR
This parameter allows the software to change the location it creates its deployment log which is a verification log for if the deployment was successful.

LOGDIR
This parameter allows the software to change the location it creates its runtime logs which are the logs written every time the software launches for diagnostic purposes.

DATABASE_PATH
This parameter only applies to the software TI-Nspire Navigator™ Teacher Software and TI-Nspire Navigator NC Teacher Software. It allows you to change the location the software writes the class and portfolio database.

PREFERED_HOSTS
This parameter only applies to the software TI-Nspire Student Software and TI-Nspire CAS Student Software. It allows you to specify a specific IP Address and Port for the Teacher Computer for schools where Multicast is disabled.

Volume Subscription, Concurrent Subscription, School-Managed and Multi-Activation License Only:

LICENSE_EXPIRATION_WARNING
This parameter if set to [Yes] will warn the user when their license is about to expire. If set to [No] the user will not receive a warning before their license expires.

DAYS_TO_WARN_BEFORE_LICENSE_EXPIRATION
This parameter allows the user to enter the amount of days the software will wait before displaying that the license is about to expire. The user can enter a date 1-31 days before the license expires. For this parameter to work the parameter "License Expiration Warning" needs to be set to [YES]

Volume License Only:

LICENSE_NUMBER
This parameter allows the user to enter their license number for silent activation. The 31 Digit license number should be entered with dashes in the above slot for all software except TI-Nspire CAS Teacher Software which has its own parameter.

LICENSE_NUMBER_2
This parameter like the above allows the user to enter their license number for silent activation. The 31 Digit license number should be entered with dashes in the above slot however the only license accepted is for the TI-Nspire CAS Teacher Software.

ACTIVATE
This parameter if set to [Yes] will attempt to activate silently immediately after the software is installed. If set to [No] the software will instead attempt to activate the first time it is launched. There needs to be a license number listed in the appropriate "License Number" parameter for this parameter to work.

ACTIVATION_TIME_LIMIT
This parameter allows the user to enter a delay before attempting activation. The software will pick a time between 0 seconds and the specified time up to 600 seconds. This is useful if deploying to a large amount of users to conserve network bandwidth.

Concurrent License Only:

ALLOW_LICENSE_BORROW
When set to [Yes] allows a user to go to [Help] [Manage Subscription] [Borrow License] in the TI-Nspire Family software to check out a license to use off network. This takes a network license off network that cannot be used by anyone else until it is returned.

MAX_DAYS_TO_BORROW_LICENSE
Allows you to set the borrow time in days the user is allowed to borrow a license. This can be set any amount days from 1-365.  In order for this parameter to have an effect "Allow License Borrow" must be set to Yes.

Concurrent and School Managed License:

LICENSE_SERVER_1 - LICENSE_SERVER_2 - LICENSE_SERVER_3
These parameters allows you to enter the [Hostname/IP address] of the computer the TI-Admin Software is installed on for license checkout. It is suggested to enter the hostname in license server 1 and the IP address in the field license server 2 in case the hostname cannot be resolved.

Once you have decided what parameters you wish to edit, make your changes in your non formatting text editor and save the file.
