Big Data Sets- Well Being OECD

Activity Overview

Students can explore the data in this activity from the OECD well-being survey updated July 2022.

About the Lesson

Giving students large data sets can be a challenging and motivating experience. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), an international organization of 37 countries and four partner countries, works to build better lives by shaping policies that foster prosperity, equality, opportunity and well-being for all. They use over 80 indicators, covering current well-being outcomes, inequalities, and resources for future well-being.

The data in this activity are from the OECD well-being survey updated version July 2022. The data have different units and magnitudes, and some values may be missing. The data might be used to investigate questions related to well-being such as the status of the US, comparing the US to selected countries, or how a particular variable such as education plays out across the countries. The file OECD_spoke_diagram.tns can be used to look at how a country fares across all of the variables and also contains a filter program that allows the user to create displays or calculate statistics using a subset of the countries.

"Exploring Big Data Sets Guide" provides guidance on using the data sets to engage students in the data science process using a recommended structure.
