Xtreme Calculus: Part 2

Published on 07/29/2010

Activity Overview

Students explore distance-time and velocity-time graphs to deepen their understanding of the application of the derivative.

Objectives

In this activity, students will explore distance-time and velocity-time graphs to deepen their understanding of the application of the derivative. Students observe and analyze motion to understand average velocity, instantaneous velocity, speed, and acceleration.

About the Lesson

Students make predictions about the relationship between a distance-time graph and a velocity-time graph. They also relate a velocity-time to an acceleration-time graph. These piecewise functions result in extreme changes. The velocity and acceleration do not exist at a cusp.
