Activity Overview

In the Translations “lesson bundle”, students will explore translations and their properties. Throughout the lessons, students are encouraged to make observations related to their investigations, leading them to discovering the properties of translated figures. Explorations can be done via translations on a grid by direction, or using a vector.

Objectives

Students will:

  • Learn to identify and perform translations with technology and without technology.
  • Explore the relationship between the corresponding parts of the pre-image and image triangles.
  • Verify experimentally the properties of translations via direction and by vector.
  • Explain how underlying properties relate to translation.
  • Understand the effects that a translation has upon a triangle by easily manipulating the triangle.
  • Discover how to translate a figure by hand.

About the Lesson

 This series of lessons exploring Translations is designed to be a thorough first exposure to geometric transformations for middle grades and high school. They are designed so that the students investigate and discover the math in no more than 15 seconds.

To obtain the optimal results for your students:

  • Always have students do the “Tour” activity first – before doing any of the other lessons. The Tour contains information that is needed to understand how to do the other lessons.

    For Translations, there are two tours: one translating based on up, down, left, right (direction), the other based on using a vector.

  • Follow the sequence: Tour first, then Lesson 1, Lesson 2, etc. However, once the Tour is completed, the lessons can be done in any order.
