You must still think yourself, CAS can only help

Activity Overview

This activity illustrates the proof of having three zeros on a cubic function using CAS.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 1 - 2 from the attached PDF file for the class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Take a cubic function and draw its graph
  • Choose a linear function that intersects the cubic function three times
  • Determine three solutions (zeros) and find their sum
  • Repeat the same procedure for another cubic function
  • Use a general cubic function and CAS to prove that cubic functions have three zeros on it
  • Solve other examples using CAS
  • After the Activity

    Review student results.

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
