Algebra II: Airport Impact Study

by Texas Instruments

Overview

Students perform a simulation to measure the sound intensity at different distances from the source of a noise, and then use the data to develop an inverse variation model.

Key Steps

  • Image

Students will investigate inverse variation. They will enter data of sound readings at various distances from a noise source given on the worksheet into lists L1 and L2. They will use this data to develop a model of intensity and map safe and unsafe zones.

  • Image

Students will calculate the square of the distance and intensity multiplied by the square of the distance. This will show students the constant of variation.

  • Image

Students will graph the data collected as a scatter plot and use the constant of variation to graph a function that models the data. This function will help them determine and graph the zones on their worksheet.
