Driving Mathematical Exploration

Only a few years ago autonomous vehicles became possible, they now appear to be inevitable. The transformation and disruption to the transportation industry is expected to contribute more than $10 trillion to the global economy. The horseless carriage is becoming the driverless car. Imagine being able to schedule your car to take you where you need to go, and rather than leaving it in the car park, send it out to works as a driverless ride share vehicle. The TI-Innovator™ Rover provides an accessible platform to help build an understanding of how autonomous vehicles operate. Design, engineer, build mathematical algorithms, simulate, road test and review; these are all aspects of these STEM-automotive activities.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Adaptive Cruise Control

Basic cruise control drives a vehicle forward at a constant speed. Adaptive cruise control will automatically slow down, speed up or even stop the autonomous vehicle based on the location and speed of vehicles in front. In this activity students can use IF statements or Piece-wise functions to automatically change Rover's speed to accommodate vehicles detected by Rovers ultrasonic sensor.

Reverse Parking

Reverse Parking

One of the features in some new vehicles is the ability to autonomously reverse park. In this activity students explore relationships between the power delivered to each of Rover's motors to determine the most appropriate power delivery to negotiate a reverse park.

Self Parking Vehicles

Self Parking Car

Students model the path of a vehicle exiting a parking space using trigonometric, cubic and piece-wise functions combined with appropriate transformations and calculus. Parameters are involved as Rover measures the distance to the vehicle in-front, student equations must accommodate for this parameter so Rover may exit the parking space autonomously. Are your students up for the challenge?
