Build a Snowman

Activity Overview

Students use a variety of functions and relations including: linear, parabolas, circles, hyperbolas and exponential functions to build a picture of a snowman. Students identify the strengths, limitations and assumptions as they progress through the task.

Objectives

Students combine their transformational knowledge of a range of functions and relations to build a picture of a snowman. An ISMG is provided to assist with assessment of student work.

Vocabulary

  • Linear function
  • Parabola
  • Circle
  • Hyperbola
  • Exponential
  • Translation
  • Dilation
  • Reflection

About the Lesson

In this activity students use a problem solving and modelling approach using both analytic procedures and technology to build a model of a snowman. Rather than using snow, students use linear, parabolic, hyperbolic and exponential functions, and relations (circles) to build their snowman. An instrument specific marking guide (ISMG) is provided to help grade the task.
