In this activity, students are asked to recognize a pattern for the derivative of a power function. After finding the derivative of several power functions, the student is asked to write a conjecture for the rule. The student is then asked to use to conjecture on some problems, and then check the answers using the TI-Nspire CAS device.

Students will need to know how to find a derivative on the particular device they are using. Download the TNS file and have it available for students.

The activity is self-directed. Students may work alone or in groups. This particular activity is written for the TI-Nspire (CAS) but is easily translated for use on other CAS devices.

The teacher should check the understanding of students in finding derivatives of power functions.
