Introduction to Proof

Activity Overview

Students begin by simplifying an algebraic expression. They then take this process and use the theorems to justify every step. This introduces the idea of proof as a method of justification. A geometric proof is introduced at the end.

Before the Activity

Load the TNS file on the handhelds or have students link to get them. Hand out the worksheet for them to complete. Have students work together in pairs to promote math discusssion.

During the Activity

Focus students by walking around the room. Highlight good math discussions. The activity can also be a teacher directed using an overhead.

After the Activity

Collect the worksheets. Have students save their files using their name and some other descriptive information.
