Are You Normal Size?

Activity Overview

Students use established body proportions to see if their own proportions are normal.

Before the Activity

This activity could be preceded with readings in the area of forensics. Google "body proportions in mathematics" to find a wealth of materials.

You may want to keep on alert for episodes of CSI or Numb3rs or similar shows for relevant clips.

During the Activity

You may want to duplicate or project the page with the equations and diagram of a skeleton.

After the Activity

You could collect classroom data to see if the class is normal.

You could extend the discussion to concepts of slope, intercepts, domain, range, outliers.

Do the equations work all the time?
