 Introduction

In this module you will solve three application problems that ask you to find either a maximum or a minimum. These problems were chosen because they illustrate the relationship between a function and its derivatives. The derivatives are rather complicated so technology will be helpful in finding zeros and describing the behaviors of the functions.

Lesson Index:

    14.1 - The Cone Problem

    14.2 - The Can Problem

14.3 - The Can Problem With Waste

After completing this module, you should be able to do the following:

  • Solve optimization problems
  • Define a function for the quantity to be optimized
  • Use the first derivative and the second derivative to justify the maximum or minimum values
