Forensics with TI-Nspire™ - Case File: Tracks of a Killer

Activity Overview

In this activity, students will analyze the relationship between shoe size, stride length, and height, and then use that information to identify the killer.

Objectives

  • Determine if there is a relationship between the length of a person’s stride and his or her height.
  • Determine if there is a relationship between the size of a person’s shoes and his or her height.
  • Efficiently gather data to test for correlations between height, shoe size, and stride length.
  • Use a linear regression model of the data to predict height based on stride length.

About the Lesson

  • This lab introduces the concepts of linear regression and correlation coefficient values through an analysis of the relationship between stride length, shoe size, and height.
  • The TI-NspireTM file contains complete instructions for the data collection using Nspire or you may prefer to print the student activity sheet, and have students answer questions on the activity sheet. All assessment questions are included in both places giving the teacher the flexibility to decide whether to collect the TNS files with data and answers or whether they prefer to collect a printed version of the answers. Students can download the .tns files and use them as a stand-alone resource, as all instructions and assessment questions are included in the .tns file.
