Teaching Strategies for Success in a Mathematics Classroom

This workshop will focus on current best practices and research in effective teaching strategies. Participants will learn together to deepen understanding of learning and assessment with TI technology as a tool. We will discuss approaches for making thinking visible, incorporating questioning strategies such as anticipating, pacing, monitoring and sequencing.

Participants will:

  • Explore tasks that allow students to engage in teaching strategies that support the Eight Mathematical Teaching Practices as outlined by NCTM’s “Principles to Actions”
  • Investigate different teaching strategies and TI technology tools to better incorporate the Mathematical Teaching Practices in their classrooms

By the end of this workshop, educators should be able to say, I can:

  • Analyze how visual and open tasks contribute to implementing effective teaching practices in mathematics
  • Identify teaching strategies that deepen my understanding of effective teaching practices for mathematics
  • Use students’ responses to advance the understanding of the class as a whole

Overview

This in-person workshop is available in one- and two-day options to accommodate educator-specific needs, and it supports educators that are using either the TI-84 Plus family of graphing calculators or TI-Nspire™ technology. A half-day workshop option is also available. The two-day workshop offers a more extensive exploration of topics and strategies. A virtual workshop is also available in multiple two- or three-hour sessions.

Day One

Participants will engage in activities to:

  • Identify teaching strategies that support the Mathematics Teaching Practices
  • Emphasize NCTM’s “Five Practices for Orchestrating Productive Math Discussions”
  • Purposefully consider how they would integrate tasks into their own classroom by looking at the variety of planning and instructional decisions needed before, during and after the lesson

Day Two

Participants will engage in additional activities to:

  • Practice listening, observing and identifying key solution strategies, and sequencing student work samples to move the mathematics learning forward
  • Identify questions that probe student understanding and push student thinking
  • Experience and discuss the strategy of collecting data to foster deeper understanding and have students take ownership of the mathematics
  • Examine different teaching strategies used in differentiated instruction in secondary mathematics
