"Because technology and graphing calculators are a vital part of instruction and learning in our county, many teachers - including me - have been trained to use them. Our students, in fact, are allowed to use them on state and county exams.
For these reasons, and many others, I recommend that my students purchase their own graphing calculator to use outside of the classroom. I am confident in my recommendation, knowing that graphing calculators will last my middle school students throughout high school and, in many cases, through college.
Some parents unfortunately cannot afford to buy a graphing calculator for their children. To help these parents and their children, our county purchased graphing calculators to rent to these middle school students for the school year.
This program has been a great success because these students now have graphing calculators to use both in class and at home. The effort is supported by everyone in our school, including our principal, technology coordinator, curriculum department, math department chairperson and fellow math teachers.
In the hands of these students, technology definitely enhances learning. My students are actively engaged in the learning process, and technology facilitates enthusiasm and a sense of wonder for mathematics that they would not have without it."
