Foundations of Algebra

Who should attend:
Middle school and high school teachers who are teaching mathematics out of their undergraduate major discipline, want an update in basic algebraic concepts utilizing appropriate technology and activity-based materials, or want to develop a broader and deeper understanding of algebraic concepts.

Objectives:
To model good teaching practices utilizing appropriate materials and technology including the TI-Navigator and TI-SmartView software
To assist teachers in reflecting on teaching Pre-Algebra and Algebra
To further teachers’ conceptual understanding of basic algebraic concepts
To engage teachers in hands-on, interactive activities that develop a broader and deeper understanding of algebraic concepts
To allow teachers to explore the mathematics of linear functions, linear inequalities, linear equations, quadratic functions and parametrically-defined functions
To assist teachers in gaining familiarity with and comfort in using technology to learn algebraic concepts
To address the issue of technology’s role in assessment.
Facilities Requirements:
This course can take place in a classroom, preferably with tables.  Internet access is desirable for the instructor.
Materials List:
The Organizer
The following is a list of equipment and materials that the organizer must provide:
High-intensity overhead projector with spare bulbs.
Overhead pens, supply of blank transparency sheets, dry-erase markers for white board if that type of board is used in the classroom, or chalk and erasers for a chalkboard.
Name tags for participants.
An LCD projector and screen for use with a laptop computer, TI Presenter and/or TI Smartview
Other Materials:
Stopwatch
A ball to bounce and pass (such as a basketball, beachball, racquet ball)
M&M candies (about 50-60 per person)
Paper cups (one person)
8.5x11 sheets of paper (about 4 person)
Pennies (about 20 per group of 2-3 people)
Metric rulers (one per group of 2-3 people)
The T³ Office
The T³ Office will provide enough copies of the notebook of activities. The instructor will arrange with Texas Instruments Workshop Loan Program (1-888-917-6411) to provide a sufficient number of:
TI-84 Plus calculators with Navigator APPS installed
TI Navigator System
One TI-84 Plus ViewScreen™ overhead panel with DC power adapter.
