Exploring with Data Collection Devices and the TI-73 Explorer

Who should attend:
Those who desire to learn more about the data collection features of the TI-73 Explorer to assist them in covering topics in middle school mathematics and science.

Objectives:
Use technology to explore and investigate modes of teaching middle school mathematics and science
Experience problem solving situations that take advantage of the exploration/investigation mode of classroom interaction
Work through classroom ready activities that use data collection devices and graphing calculators to enhance students’ understanding and problem solving ability
Develop teachers’ familiarity with the TI-73 Explorer and data collection devices through hands-on explorations modeling effective classroom use of technology
Course Outline:

The main source of content for this course will be the activities from the Explorations book Adventures in Data Collection with the TI-73 Explorer. This book will also be offered to participants of the institutes. These activities are classroom ready for teachers to implement right way!

Additional activities will be supplemented as determined by the instructor to suit the needs of the participants and the length of the institute (3 days).

Facilities Requirements:
A Science Lab with tables and access to hot and cold water is preferred, although a regular classroom would suffice. Although a computer lab is not needed for this institute, the instructor might want to discuss with the organizer the lab’s availability for TI Connectivity and Internet use.

High-intensity overhead projector with spare bulbs.
Overhead pens, supply of blank transparency sheets, dry-erase markers for white board if that type of board is used in the classroom, or chalk and erasers for a chalkboard.
Name tags for participants
An LCD projector and screen for use with a laptop computer, TI Presenter and/or TI Smartview.
