Exploring with the TI-84 Plus

Who should attend:
Those who desire to learn more about the features of the TI-84 Plus to assist them in covering topics in middle school and high school mathematics.
TI Educational Technology used:
TI-84 Plus or TI-83 Plus
TI-84 Plus Silver Edition or TI-83 Plus Silver Edition
Objectives:
Use technology to explore and investigate modes of teaching secondary and middle school mathematics including pre-algebra and algebra.
Experience problem solving situations that take advantage of the exploration/investigation mode of classroom interaction
Work through classroom ready activities that use graphing calculators to enhance students’ understanding and problem solving ability
Develop teachers’ familiarity with the TI-84 Plus through hands-on explorations modeling effective classroom use of technology

Course Outline:

The main source of content for this course will be the activities from the Explorations book Activities for Algebra with the TI-83 Plus. This book will also be offered to participants of the institutes. These activities are classroom ready for teachers to implement right way!

Additional activities will be supplemented as determined by the instructor to suit the needs of the participants and the length of the institute (3 days). These could include various apps available on the TI-84 Plus and additional topics such as Calculus.

Facilities Requirements:
Classroom with chalkboard or white board.Some of the labs will require access to water, ice and a microwave.

Although a computer lab is not needed for this institute, the instructor might want to discuss with the organizer the lab’s availability for TI Connectivity and Internet use.

Materials List:
The Organizer
The following is a list of equipment and materials that the organizer must provide:
High-intensity overhead projector with spare bulbs.
Overhead pens, supply of blank transparency sheets, dry-erase markers for white board if that type of board is used in the classroom, or chalk and erasers for a chalkboard.
Name tags for participants
An LCD projector and screen for use with a laptop computer, TI Presenter and/or TI Smartview.

8 Bathroom scales, kitchen scales or small scales
Box of Wooden blocks
8 Wooden planks (2-4 cm thick, 25-40 cm wide, 120-140 cm long)
Textbooks to act as weight
24 Paper cups
500 Pennies (mixture of pre 1983 and post 1984)
Card stock (poster board, manila folders or any heavyweight paper.
30 Scissors
30 rulers
Scale or balance that measure in grams
Leaves of various sizes (at least one per student)
8 50 ml graduated cylinders
Paper towels
10 m of string
Pencils
Colored pencils
8 Compasses
Graph paper
8 Slinky’s
Box of Large paper clips
Rubber bands
Small cubes, candies or counters
8 small potatoes
Celsius and Fahrenheit Thermometers
8 stop watches or watches with second hands

The instructor may need the organizer to request that participants bring copies of their textbooks so they can plan where technology can best be incorporated into their lesson plans.

The instructor will arrange with Texas Instruments Workshop Loan Program (1-888-917-6411) to provide:

30 TI-84 Plus calculators
One TI-84 Plus ViewScreen™ overhead panel with DC power adapter.
8 CBR2 (Ranger)
8 CBL2
8 Stainless Steel Temperature Probes or EasyTemp Sensors
Small supply of batteries for the TI-84 Plus calculators.
Supply of TI Connectivity cables.
