Objectives: The objectives of the Vernier-T³ Institutes are to:
•	Develop data collection skills using handheld technology
•	Demonstrate new and innovative methods of data collection
•	Develop data analysis skills using handheld technology
•	Investigate the potential for data collection and data analysis using a computer
•	Model and develop skills for teaching science as inquiry
•	Introduce participants to new classroom experiments and activities
•	Consider how technology will affect traditional means of instruction and assessment
•	Investigate how handheld technology activities can be done
•	Develop teacher leaders capable of supporting long term, systemic professional development needs
•	Address adult learner concepts and effective ways of teaching adults

Introduction: The goal of the course is to instruct teachers in new and innovative ways to effectively teach mathematics using technology in addition to developing a teacher leader community to support local, ongoing professional development needs. The primary focus of the Vernier-T³ Science Institutes is to expose participants to powerful tools that facilitate both data collection and data analysis in science classrooms. These tools open new opportunities for science education and can create a learning environment conducive to developing scientific literacy for all students. Participants will have many hands-on opportunities so they can experience this enriched learning environment for themselves. They also will be provided with the opportunity to consider what they might do with the technology in their own classrooms. Standards: Materials for this series of institutes were written in the spirit of the National Science Education Standards (1996). This document identifies standards for: science content, science teaching, professional development for science teachers, and assessment in science education. The Vernier book, Biology with Calculators is correlated to the National Science Standards.
