Middle Grades Mathematics with TI-Navigator™ and the TI-73 Explorer

Course Overview
Who should attend:
Mathematics teachers who have access to a TI-Navigator system.

TI educational technology used: TI-73 Explorer, TI Keyboard, various Apps for calculators, TI-Navigator system, which includes computer hardware and software

The objectives of the High School Math with TI-Navigator Institute are:

To instruct teachers on the use of the LearningCheck App to electronically answer questions designed by the T³ instructor.
To instruct teachers on the use of the LearningCheck Creator software to design documents to send to students through the TI-Navigator system.
To assist teachers on the analysis of the class results retrieved through the TI-Navigator system.
To instruct teachers on the use of the TI-Navigator to transfer calculator files from the teacher computer to all connected student calculators.
To instruct teachers on the use of the Activity Center for collaborative learning.
To instruct teachers on the use of Screen Capture and Quick Poll Navigator features to enhance classroom learning.
To demonstrate the various uses of the TI-Navigator system through math classroom activities.
Introduction:
The TI-Navigator system creates a wireless classroom network of student handhelds (TI-83 Plus and TI-84 Plus families, and TI-73 Explorer). The TI-Navigator allows teachers to quickly distribute, collect, aggregate, and assess curricular materials from all students simultaneously. Additionally, the TI-Navigator system allows teachers to leverage the graphing and data capabilities of the individual device into collaborative classroom activities where everyone can own part of a common set of data and representations. Students can work together to create shared data sets, to experiment with mathematical modeling, or to explore families of equations. Through their collaboration, the class can solve problems and create objects that may be beyond the current capacity of any individual student in the group. The goal of the institution is to prepare teachers for using the TI-Navigator system in their mathematics classroom.

Standards:
Materials for this institute were written in the spirit of the NCTM's Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (NCTM, 1989), Professional Teaching Standards (NCTM, 1991), and Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (NCTM, 2000).
