Geometry Using the TI-83 Plus/TI-84 Plus Institute

Course Overview
Who should attend:
Inservice secondary mathematics teachers in grades 7 through 12. Much of the institute will be devoted to teaching geometry. However, since the integration of geometry topics throughout the entire secondary curriculum is an important priority established by the NCTM, mathematics teachers from across the secondary grades are invited to participate.

TI educational technology used: TI-83 Plus, TI-83 Plus Silver Edition, TI-84 Plus, or TI-84 Plus Silver Edition, Cabri Geometry II Plus™ software, TI Connect™ Software and CabriTM  Jr. App, and TI-Navigator™ system.

The objectives of the Geometry using the TI-83 Plus/TI-84 Plus Institute are to:

Explore and investigate new ways to teach and assess secondary mathematics, including geometry, algebra, trigonometry, and other topics, as they relate to the overall topic of geometry through the use of technology;
Experience problem solving situations that take advantage of the exploration/ investigation mode of classroom interaction;
Investigate traditional and alternative geometry topics enhanced with technology in a balanced program of problem solving, reasoning, connections, communication, and assessment;
Create classroom activities that use interactive geometry software to enhance students' understanding and problem solving ability;
Develop teachers' familiarity and facility with interactive geometry software for the computer and graphing calculator.
Develop teacher leaders capable of supporting long term, systemic professional development needs
Address adult learner concepts and effective ways of teaching adults
Introduction:
The goal of the course is to instruct teachers in new and innovative ways to effectively teach mathematics using technology in addition to developing a teacher leader community to support local, ongoing professional development needs. The T³ Geometry using the TI-83 Plus/TI-84 Plus Institute is a 9-day professional development program for secondary mathematics teachers using interactive geometry software to enhance geometry instruction in grades 7 through 12. The primary focus of the Institute's activities is exploration of geometric concepts and problems using the Cabri Jr. application for the TI-83 Plus/TI-84 Plus to investigate properties and interrelationships between and among geometric figures. Participants will take part in hands-on explorations modeling effective classroom use of technology for teaching mathematics and will develop model lessons utilizing teaching techniques learned.

Standards:
Materials for this institute were written in the spirit of the NCTM's Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (NCTM, 1989), Professional Teaching Standards (NCTM, 1991), and Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (NCTM, 2000).
