Objectives:
The objectives of the Advanced Topics in Mathematics course are:

| • | To assist teachers in gaining confidence to use new teaching strategies and lessons that incorporate the use of technology in their classrooms |
| • | To instruct teachers in the exploration/investigation mode of teaching mathematics including precalculus, statistics and calculus |
| • | To engage teachers in significant problem solving situations and in the use of technology as a tool for teaching and learning mathematics |
| • | To develop teachers' familiarity with the TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Plus Silver Edition, Calculator-Based Ranger 2™ (CBR 2™) data collection device, Calculator Based Laboratory 2™ (CBL 2™) data collection device, and calculator applications appropriate for precalculus, statistics and calculus. |

Introduction:
The goal of this course is to instruct teachers in new and innovative ways to use technology to effectively teach concepts in precalculus, statistics and calculus while developing a teacher leader community to support local, ongoing professional development needs. The primary focus of the course is the exploration of functions as well as the mathematics of variability and change using TI calculators, data collection devices, and computer technology as tools for teaching and learning. Participants will learn new teaching strategies and will have opportunities for hands-on experiences with a variety of precalculus, statistics and calculus activities. This course is designed for new or experienced users of the TI-84 Plus.

Materials for this course were written in the spirit of the NCTM's Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (NCTM, 1989), Professional Teaching Standards (NCTM, 1991), and Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (NCTM, 2000).
