NUMB3RS

The Programme
Texas Instruments has created an exclusive set of educational activities based on series 1 to 3 of the hit crime drama NUMB3RS, that promote the many uses of mathematics and support maths teaching. They have been developed for teachers and learners and are based on the mathematics presented in each episode.

NUMB3RS is being broadcast on a free-to-air channel in the UK for the first time in 2010. Series 6 is now showing every Wednesday night on five.

Activities from episodes in the first three series are available to download from the left-hand menu.

About the activities
NUMB3RS is based on real FBI cases. Mathematics consultants work with the NUMB3RS team to ensure the accuracy of the maths used to help analyse and solve crimes. These activities were designed to help learners (and their parents) see how relevant maths is to everyday activities and understand the importance maths plays in their future success. By linking the maths used within each episode to classroom activities, teachers can increase learner interest with these real-world, functional examples. Each activity has been created especially for learners aged 15 and over.

About the programme
NUMB3RS is a drama about FBI Special Agent Don Eppes (Rob Morrow) who uses the skills of his mathematical-genius brother Charlie (David Krumholtz), to help the FBI solve crimes in LA. With their combined skills, the brothers can take on cases which confound the rest of the force. Often based on actual events, NUMB3RS shows how these two seemingly disconnected worlds can be a powerful tool in crime solving when combined.

As well as his younger brother, Don is joined on the team by fellow agents Megan Reeves (Diane Farr) and Liz Warner (Aya Sumika), who specialise in the behavioural aspects of investigations, David Sinclair (Alimi Ballard), who uses the survival skills he developed growing up in New York and Colby Granger (Dylan Bruno) who has a military background.

At first the team had their doubts about the brothers' methods, but when they saw the results they warmed to the unusual take on criminal investigation. The boys' father, Alan (Judd Hirsch), doesn’t quite grasp what his sons are doing for a living but he’s happy to see them working together.

Charlie is helped out by his fellow boffins at CalSci. Physicist friend Larry Fleinhardt (Peter MacNicol) and Charlie's former student Amita Ramanujan (Navi Rawat), frequently help him to see cases in a new light and focus his skills on the investigation. Though the brothers couldn’t be more different, they are able to combine their individual skills to the benefit of the FBI.
