Activity Detail

If you are using a TI-73, TI-83, TI-84 or TI-89, there may be particular math or science applications you will need to download to use certain activities. If you are using TI-Nspire technology, please update your TI-Nspire handheld operating system or computer software to view the latest activities. The latest TI-Nspire operating system was released in June 2009.

Buried Objects - Adventure 1

Activity Overview

Students use the CBR 2™ to gather data and identify "buried" objects. They interpret and analyze graphs of height as a function of time, and use the change in the y-coordinates of an ordered pair to determine the height of an object.

Before the Activity

  • Connect the Calculator-Based Ranger CBR 2 to the calculator.
  • Set up the CBR 2 to collect one data point every 0.05 seconds
  • Launch the CBR/CBL™ App
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this adventure
  • Print pages 11 - 12 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • Set up the TI-Navigator™  system

  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Adventure procedures:
    Collect Data:
  • Set up 4 - 5 large boxes with flaps taped upward
  • Place a small object such as a toy car, mug, roll of tape, or roller skate in each box
  • Place a block of wood or a small box on a desk making sure that there is nothing else on the surface
  • Hold the CBR about a meter above the desktop at one end of the desk with the light-gray part of the detector facing the desk
  • Slowly move the motion detector, at a constant height above the desktop, from one end of the desk to the other end at constant speed
  • Collect data and view the graph
  • Collect data on other boxes and view the graphs generated with different objects

  • To find the location and shape of the buried object:
  • Collect data from each of the suspected "burial sites" using the CBR as a GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) device.
  • Analyze the graphs
  • Find the site where the car is buried and its height

  • TI-Navigator activity:
  • Load the ordergraphs.act activity settings file
  • Use Quick Poll (with Open Response) to have students list the graphs
  • Ask students to submit points that would simulate a CBR display for different objects

    After the Activity

Students analyze the results and answer the questions in the worksheet

    Review student results:
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
