Activity Detail

If you are using a TI-73, TI-83, TI-84 or TI-89, there may be particular math or science applications you will need to download to use certain activities. If you are using TI-Nspire technology, please update your TI-Nspire handheld operating system or computer software to view the latest activities. The latest TI-Nspire operating system was released in June 2009.

Activity Overview

Students determine the pH of liquid samples. They get familiar with the pH scale, create graphs comparing pH levels, and compare data displayed as a scatter plot, a boxplot, a histogram, and a bar graph.

Before the Activity

  • Use TI Connect™ to download Vernier EasyData™ application
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 135 - 144 from the attached PDF file for the class
  • Connect Vernier EasyLink™ interface to the calculator and pH sensor
  • Set up the calculator for data collection

  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Place the pH sensor probe in distilled water and measure the pH of water
  • Place the probe in the second sample and record the pH
  • Rinse pH sensor with distilled water before using it for the next reading
  • Record the pH of the other samples
  • View the scatter plot for the data
  • Set a line in the graph at pH 7 and notice where the beverage's pH are placed in comparison to it
  • Compare the predicted pH description with the actual pH description
  • Graph the pH data in the form of a box-and-whisker plot and compare pH of beverages
  • Find the mean and median values
  • Plot pH data as histograms, label the graph, and compare the pH values of the beverages

    After the Activity

  • Students analyze the results and answer the case analysis questions on the student worksheet.
  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
