Activity Detail

If you are using a TI-73, TI-83, TI-84 or TI-89, there may be particular math or science applications you will need to download to use certain activities. If you are using TI-Nspire technology, please update your TI-Nspire handheld operating system or computer software to view the latest activities. The latest TI-Nspire operating system was released in June 2009.

Activity Overview

Students take distance readings as they walk in front of a CBR™. They apply the properties of a linear function to develop a model for the motion and interpret the values used in the model. Students learn to graph scatter plots, calculate slope, and graph linear function.

Before the Activity

  • Use TI Connect™ to download Vernier EasyData™ application
  • Connect the calculator to the CBR 2™
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 41 - 48 from the attached PDF file for the class
  • Set up the calculator for data collection

  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Position the CBR and align it with the calf of the walker
  • Have the walker stand in front of the CBR, and record the distance of this position
  • Record this as the first event
  • Have the walker take a step and measure the distance again and record it as the next event
  • Take distance reading for at least 6 steps
  • Graph all the data points and trace the plot
  • Understand that Events is the independent variable and Distance is the dependent variable
  • Find the line of best fit
  • Find the coordinate of the points and calculate the slope and use it to plot the line
  • Recognize the fact that slope represents the change in distance per step taken
  • Adjust the Y-intercept till the line matches the data points
  • Perform a linear regression and find the equation of the line of best fit
  • Determine how far the walker would be from the CBR if 20 steps are taken

    After the Activity

  • Students analyze the results and answer the case analysis questions on the student worksheet.
  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
