Activity Overview

Students compare their height with the average height of students in the classroom. They create histograms to analyze the data, and construct boxplots to summarize the height statistics.

Before the Activity

  • Use TI Connect™ to download Vernier EasyData™ application
  • Connect the calculator to the CBR 2™
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 23 - 34 from the attached PDF file for the classroom
  • Set up the calculator for data collection


  • During the Activity

    Distribute the pages to the students.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Set up a long wooden board at a certain height such that the student can just stand beneath it
  • Position the CBR under the board such that it can take readings without any obstructions
  • Using the calculator and the CBR, measure the heights of 12 students and the teacher
  • Graph all the data points and view their coordinates
  • Observe that the plots are Distance versus Events
  • Understand that Events stand for independent variable and Distance stands for dependent variable
  • Sort the data in the distance list in ascending order
  • Create a box-and-whisker plot
  • Line the data on the number line on the worksheet, and identify the median and the quartiles
  • Use the calculator to verify the answers
  • Analyze the boxplots and the whiskers
  • Present the data in a histogram
  • Answer the questions listed on the student worksheet


    After the Activity

  • Students analyze the results of the case analysis questions on the student worksheet
  • Review student results
  • As a group, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
