Activity Overview

Students explore probability and patterns in fractions, decimals, and percents by spinning three spinners and recording and analyzing the results.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print student activity sheets pages 108 - 109 from attached PDF for your class.

  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Make a simple spinning device using a paper clip, a pencil, and one of the spinner circles
  • Tally the results after ten spins using Spinner A
  • Use the calculator to record probability as fractions, decimals, and percents
  • Spin Spinner A 40 times to collect data, record the results as fractions, decimals, and percents after every 10 spins
  • Spin and collect data in the same way for Spinners B and C
  • Compile the data into one class chart for each spinner
  • Analyze the class data and write about the pattern noticed

    After the Activity
