Do Centimeters Make Me Taller?

Activity Overview

Students use measuring tools and calculators to find pairs of measurements and form ratios. Then they compare the ratios and make conclusions about using different units to measure lengths.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print student activity sheet page 88 from the attached PDF file for your class

  • During the Activity

Distribute the page to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Mark the student's height and the length of his or her foot on paper
  • Use the length of the foot to measure the height
  • Record the results in a chart
  • Measure the length of the foot and height using standard measure
  • Compare the ratio of the two measurements
  • Express the foot/height ratio as a fraction and change to a decimal and compare the values
  • Repeat this process with one more nonstandard unit and one more standard unit of measure and then discuss the results

    After the Activity

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
