Activity Overview

Students explore map making. Students read a story, identify the locations of different places in the story, decide the distance between each set of places in the story, and create a map with a legend.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print student activity sheets page 75 from the attached PDF file for your class.

  • During the Activity

    Distribute the page to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Select as book or story in which characters move from place to place and read it
  • Create an imaginary map of the action in the story
  • Create a legend with a scale for distances
  • Identify at least three different locations from the story, determine the distances between those places on the map


    After the Activity

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
