Patterns in Division

Activity Overview

Students investigate how the quotients and remainders from integer division relate to the quotients from rational number division in both fraction and decimal form.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print student activity sheets pages 62 - 63 from the attached PDF file for your class

  • During the Activity

Distribute the page to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • 10 cookies are divided among 3 people, find the number of cookies each person will get
  • Determine the whole number quotient and the whole number remainder
  • Record the quotient as a fraction
  • Use the fraction notation on the calculator to find the mixed number quotient and change the fraction to decimal form
  • Use the calculator to find the decimal quotient
  • Compare the quotient values
  • Repeat the division activity with 20, 30, and 35 cookies
  • Repeat the activity using 4 as a divisor instead of 3

    After the Activity

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
